All kinds of updates!

Monday, August 31, 2009
First off, I'm not sure who reads this that isn't already my friend on facebook, but in case there are a few--I'll post a link to some of the new albums I've put up. I took these pictures last Friday when Henry turned 1 month old--I think they turned out really cute. Here's a few: click on the first picture to link up to the rest of the album.

Here's a few more links to more photos:

Henry's First Photo Shoot

The original album I posted

And yet just one more

I can't believe Henry is already 1 month! Time has flown by and he has changed so much already in just 5 short weeks.

We went to church as a family for the first time on Saturday with a few of our neighbors. Here's a photo of Henry in his Sunday--or rather Saturday best:Henry started out pretty great at church--he slept for the first 15 minutes or so....but then after that he wasn't a happy baby. He and I went to the '"crying room" for the rest of mass and he cried for a good portion of it--but hey, that's why they call it a crying room and that's what it's there for, right?

Saturday Henry also met his first baby. Baby Sofia and her parents (our friends Andrea and Alex) came over and brought us lasagna! Henry slept most of the time. Once he woke up and I brought the camera out, he wasn't too happy. They did hold hands for a bit:

If you're wondering, Sofia is almost 4 months old. Henry's not too far behind her in size considering he's 3 months younger! As parents, Andrea and I were swapping "poop" stories and I was able to proudly proclaim that Henry had not yet pooped out of his diaper and all over his clothes. When did Henry decide to accomplish this amazing feat?---probably no more than an hour after I bragged about him not doing it yet. Daddy changed that diaper, and in the course of changing it, Henry ended up with poop everywhere...including his arm. The same day I also encountered my first experience with him pooping as I'm changing the diaper. It was quite the mess....and with a little more distance it likely would have landed on the arm of the couch near the changing table.

Last night we only had to wake up once! I fed Henry at 9:15 and he didn't wake up until 3:38am! He was then up for the day at 6am--right when daddy gets up. Otherwise he typically only wakes up 2, sometimes 3 times. His initial stretch is pretty long, and keeps getting longer which helps me feel a bit more refreshed since sleep isn't fragmented quite as much anymore.

We also had a successful short shopping trip to Kohls and Target last week. I even got to try on clothes! He pretty much slept the whole time. Right now, that's the only way he's "good" when we go out because if he's awake he doesn't seem to like sitting in his travel system much yet and he will let me know...loudly.

Henry stayed with daddy for the second time yesterday when I had to go off on an engagement shoot. We timed it so Ryan would only have to feed him one bottle and the timing worked out well. I had to laugh when I got home, as there was Ryan, in the same chair, still in his robe 4 hours later. He says "Man, what a morning, I'm exhausted." I initially think he must have had feeding issues...but no. Henry was just a bit cranky at times and a few really poopy diapers. I'm guessing he no longer wonders how I can still be in my pajamas at 4:30 when he gets home. :)

Henry is five weeks tomorrow and his cord stump has STILL not fallen off yet. We got it wet during his sponge bath last night (poor baby hasn't been able to have a full bath yet) and it loosened it up a lot. At the last diaper change it appears to now be hanging on by a thread. Thank goodness I likely won't have to call the clinic yet again. I'm hoping it falls off later today or tomorrow.

I think that's all I have for now! Enjoy the photos!

Henry's Baptism

Thursday, August 27, 2009
We've scheduled Henry's baptism for September 27th--a Sunday. We are going to try a new church that some of our neighbors go to that they really like. So, for the first time since we've lived in the metro area, we are going to start going to church. Here's a link to the one we decided on.

I'll be sending out invites as soon as I order/buy them and they get in. The baptism will be after the 10:30 mass--so likely beginning around 11:30 or so. There can be as many as 6 infants on one Sunday, but I'm not sure how many will be there on this day.

We did survive being away from him...and other updates.

I never did get a chance to update on how our first extended period of time away from Henry was. Our lactation consultant told us that we could introduce the bottle the day we needed to be gone, and if he was hungry, he would eat. All day last Friday I was getting increasingly worried that he wouldn't take the bottle, so I attempted to give him a small amount 30 minutes before we were supposed to leave for the wedding. He was fussing and crying really bad and wouldn't take it at first, which made me start to cry and freak out. Finally, after calming him down, he did take it, and had no problems taking bottles from my mom that night.

I cried on the way to the wedding, and worried the whole time about the bottle thing until I called and checked to see that he indeed did drink the first bottle. Once we got to the wedding, I was fine until I saw our olive oil bottle which indicated the table we were to sit at. Erin was so thoughtful to put Henry's name on the card and it made me tear up...it was too cute. By most standards, I would say I didn't call too much, but was missing him like crazy the entire time, obviously.

In the coming weeks, I have a variety of short times where I need to be away from Henry including a few hours at workshop week, an engagement shoot, and a few meetings with clients. This whole pumping thing is quite stressful. I'm supposed to pump after he eats (which is every two hours). Most times I only get a few drops. The only time I get anything substantial is if he falls asleep and "skips a side". I'm starting to worry about how I'm going to build up enough of a supply for these times, and eventually when I go back to work on October 5th. I know I'll be fine after I'm away from him and can pump multiple times during the day--it's just the worry of having enough for the first full days away from him that's freaking me out right now.

Henry and I also had our first semi-successful trip out on our own yesterday. We went to Target to get some much needed groceries (we were out of all essentials including bread, butter, cereal, and coffee). He screams and screams every time I put him in his car seat, but then as soon as we are in the car and we start moving, he falls right to sleep. I hope it stays that way because that will be perfect for the 2.5 hour car rides to Winona. By the time we got to Target it was absolutely pouring rain and I got drenched since it was pretty difficult to carry him and an umbrella at the same time. I tried to shop super fast and he woke up about 15 minutes into it. He was pretty content and once I finished grocery shopping, and he was still content, I decided to go check out the clothes since I live in the same two sweatpants and three tank tops day after day. However, he began fussing, so I decided we better go while I had the chance. We made it to the check out before he all out started screaming again. He screamed the entire time I was in the check out--I was finally able to calm him down as we were leaving. I'm sure this won't be the last time he cries at the Target checkout, though. And, once we got outside, it was still pouring, but Henry was content, so I would overall call the trip semi-successful.

He is still eating every two hours, which makes trips like that pretty difficult. By the time he's done eating and I burp him, and then pump, it's pretty much time to do it all over again. I'm pretty amazed that I showered two days in a row and have gotten to eat somehow as well these past few days we have been alone. What I forget to do is go to the bathroom....I think I go maybe once a day because I honestly forget. When I get a chance to put him down, there are so many other things to do that it slips my mind.

It seems Henry has had enough of his swing, so it's time to end this post.

The final bump photo!

So Ryan looks at me yesterday and says, "I don't remember what you looked like pregnant." I decided to remind myself and realized I never posted the final bump picture. This was 41 weeks the day Henry was born. When I see him now, I think "How in the world was this baby inside of me?!" Then I see this picture and realize I was a boat with plenty of room for an 8+ pounder in there.

Updates

Thursday, August 13, 2009
As I said, it's a bit hard to post updates right now, but since Henry is sleeping in Grandma's arms right now, I have a free moment.

Henry is nursing about every 2 hours during the day, unless he's in the middle of a nap. It makes it a bit hard to think about taking him out to the grocery store or anything, but we're working on getting a good schedule down for feedings. He is sleeping about 3 hours-3.5 hours during the night, which is actually pretty great. We try to put him down at about 9pm right now, but hope to get the routine going earlier in the coming weeks. He likes to take long naps around the time of 3-7ish, so after that, he's wide awake, and we haven't been successful in putting him to bed before 9pm yet because of that.

I was a little concerned that he may not be getting enough to eat/I wasn't producing enough, so we took him to the lactation consultant just to make sure. He weighs more than his birth weight, weighing in at 8 pounds, 8 oz, so he's gained the appropriate amount. They have a super sensitive scale that can weigh the exact amount of milk he took in after a feeding, and he's taking a little less than 2 oz each feeding, which is exactly what he needs if he's eating every 2 hours, so all is well on that front.

Our good friends Andy and Erin are getting married tomorrow! This will be the first time I'm away from Henry for longer than an hour. It'll be hard, I'm sure, but we're very excited for Andy and Erin. Speaking of the wedding, I tried on a few of my old dresses today, hoping to fit in to one, especially my more "flowy" dresses...but, no luck. Despite the fact that I have already dropped more than half of my large weight gain (no, I'm still not telling), the reason my dresses weren't fitting is because I'm too big on top! This is quite a development considering I have struggled all my life trying to "fill out" dresses, so it was actually kind of amusing to me that that was the reason the dresses wouldn't zip. I do have a nice maternity dress that doesn't really look maternity, so I did find something to wear, thankfully.

My recovery from the c-section has gone immensely better than I could have ever expected. They took the staples out the day before we were discharged and replaced them with 3m "steri-strips" (basically little strips of strong tape). As soon as the staples were out, it felt much better to walk around. I haven't taken any of my pain meds since Sunday, and I'm feeling pretty normal, actually. Everything I read about a c-section recovery scared me a bit, but I'm feeling great. I have my first post partum appointment later today, so hopefully everything's looking good with my scar. It still freaks me out a bit, so I tend to not look at it much. It's also a bit hard to see, as it's hiding under the belly flab I'm still sporting :). Once I get the ok to exercise, (which I think is at 6 weeks), I'll start the sit ups in the hopes of making the flab disappear.

That's about all I have for updates for now. I will continue to post pictures, updates, and possibly videos as Henry continues to grow!

Henry's first photo shoot!

Wednesday, August 5, 2009
It is my intention to keep this blog going. Just keep in mind we have a newborn at home now, so the posts might be far and few between for a while.

For now, here's a link to some photos I took of Henry when he was 6 days old.

Also, check out the star on my photography website as well.
